Tips to Prepare for a New Job or Career

Is 2019 the year you pursue a new job or career? Ready to try something new? Flex some new skills? Way to go! We firmly believe that success is all about preparation and dedication. With a little time and forethought, that new job or career can be yours. Here are a few tips to make it happen.

Update your resume and cover letter

How you look on paper is important. Make sure your resume is updated with your past positions and relevant education and certifications. Even more important, be sure to list the skills and core competencies that correlate or are transferrable to the job you’re trying to get. This will help you bridge any gaps or differences between the jobs you’ve had, and the one you want.

Many positions also require a cover letter—a few paragraphs that narrate your past experience and accomplishments, while speaking to your ability to do the job for which you’re applying. Don’t overthink the cover letter—simple and straightforward is better than long and overly wordy.

Conduct research and informational interviews

How much should you know about the industry or company you’re attempting to build a career within? The answer: as much as humanly possible! Read up on the ins and outs of the field: the pay, current trends, employee reviews, current news, and more. Google and LinkedIn are your friends!

Take your exploration to the next level with an informational interview with an individual in your desired field or company. People who are happy in their jobs or industries are often more than willing to provide information and insight. A simple search and friendly email may be all it takes to get the inside scoop on your future career. Check out sample informational interview questions here!
