February is the month of love! While you may have a Valentine in your life, you may not have a sweetheart of a job. Going to a job that you dislike each day can take a toll on other aspects of your life. Don’t suffer in a job that doesn’t fit your interests, skills, and schedule. Here are a few ideas to help you find a job you love this month:
Think outside the box… and your past jobs.
Just because you’ve never done a certain type of job before, doesn’t mean you can’t now! Skills are often transferrable across job types. Have you been in the food service industry? You might make a great front desk office worker, because you know how to provide prompt, courteous service. Have you worked in construction? Maybe you could move into light industrial or foundry work. Try to think about different job types that may have similar skill requirements, but would also interest you.
Conduct informational interviews.
Networking is key to finding a new job, especially if it’s in a new industry. The easiest way to do this is to set up short meetings with people you know and ask them questions about their job (see question examples below). If you don’t know anyone in your industry of interest, Google and LinkedIn are your best friends. Search for individuals in your area and send emails asking for 15 minutes of their time. You’d be surprised how willing people are to talk about themselves and their jobs!
Sample informational interview questions:
- What does a typical day look like?
- How did you get your job?
- What do you do? What are the duties/functions/responsibilities of your job?
- What kinds of problems do you have to solve?
- What is your professional background?
